The Perfect Skincare Routine for an Active Lifestyle

Hey active folks, gym rats and athletes. We all know that skincare can be especially difficult to work into a busy routine. But has anyone ever taken the time to help you figure out how?

The average man’s life today revolves around numerous factors that all have one thing in common: they suck up valuable time! Unfortunately, something as healthy as exercise can negatively affect your skin.  As you’re balancing your work, family life, meals, and your exercise goals, take into account the products you are using and the routine you stick to.


The Benefits

There are many reasons that people hit the gym, or go out for their morning run. Let’s go over some of the benefits. By caring for your heart, lungs, and circulatory system as a whole, you are also showing your skin some extra love. Anything that gets your heart pumping more blood throughout your body also moves essential oxygen and nutrients to the skin more efficiently, resulting in a more vibrant and healthy look. Increased blood flow also rids your skin of waste products and free radicals, cleansing your skin from the inside-out. In addition to circulatory benefits, exercise has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety levels, which improves skin conditions like acne and eczema.

But exercise isn't purely beneficial for your skin. In fact, many people can suffer very negative effects on their skin if they do not follow a proper skincare regimen on top of their exercise. But, what are these negative effects, and how do we fight back against them?


The Downsides

Acne: By increasing sweat and oil production during exercise, you run the risk of clogging your pores and increasing blemishes. A good way to combat this is to keep your skin clean before and after exercise, and to wear moisture-wicking clothing that will pull sweat and dirt away from your skin. This prevents your pores from sucking up acne-causing bacteria and oil during and after your workout.

Rosacea: Rosacea flare-ups can be caused by a sharp rise in body temperature, which can obviously be caused, or exacerbated by intense exercise. A good recommendation for those who suffer from Rosacea would be to take their exercise routine into the pool. Pools provide a comfortable, cool temperature which will keep your internal temp regulated, and your Rosacea under control.

Sun Exposure: The relationship between exercise and skincare isn’t completely centered around sweat and bacteria. If you’re one of the many people who enjoy going for a long jog to start, or end your day, you may run the risk of increased sun exposure. Apart from the obviously negative effects of skin cancer that go beyond cosmetic imperfections, increased sun exposure could irritate and dry out your skin, or even cause increases in oil production. A good way to avoid these negative effects is to use a solid SPF (at least 30 or higher) sunblock, and to cleanse your face thoroughly after exercise, following up with a balancing moisturizer to even things out.


Your Routine

When it comes to picking a time to be active, most people will pick a specific time of day to get their exercise fix that also fits into their work and commute schedule. The great thing about being a morning person is the feeling that you’ve got the whole day ahead of you. The morning can be a great time to work out because you can get in, get out, and get on with the rest of your day. On the other hand, if you truly value your sleep, many people can squeeze in a workout when they return home from work.

Regardless of when you choose to get your daily fix, it is always best to save time for a shower and an additional 15 minutes, post-shower at least twice a week to keep your skin at its best. Here’s a shortlist of what you need to be prepared for that post-workout shower:

  1. Cleanser: A truly pH-balanced cleanser is essential to ridding your skin of sweat, bacteria, and impurities that can cause acne or other imperfections later in the day. Get clean first, then move on to step 2.
  2. Balancing Moisturizer: Once your skin is squeaky-clean and you’ve gently patted your face dry, it is a good idea to introduce yourself to a pH-balanced moisturizer. One light application will keep your skin from cracking, while replenishing its essential oils that were lost during your workout and shower.
  3.
